Westminster Accident Attorney

Founded in 1870 and incorporated as a city in 1957, Westminster is located in the northwest area of Orange County.  The city has grown from 10,755 residents at the time of incorporation to 89,807 people in 2010.

The 10 square mile city is most known for the neighborhood of Little Saigon.  With 36,000 plus residents representing 40 percent of the city’s population, Westminster has the highest per capita concentration of Vietnamese Americans.  The area is comprised of strip malls, shopping centers, and mom-and-pop restaurants.  In addition there are several Vietnamese language media outlets.

Both the San Diego Freeway and the Garden Grove Freeway run through the city.  Interstate 405, also known as the San Diego Freeway, runs along the city’s northwest to southeast border and has exits at Bolsa Avenue, Goldenwest Street, Springdale Street, and Bolsa Chica Road.  The Garden Grove Freeway or State Route 22 runs along the city’s northern border.

Located on Westminster Boulevard, the police department provides the city with traffic enforcement duties and crime prevention.  With 3 fire stations, two of them located on Hefley Street and Moran Street, the Orange County Fire Authority is contracted out by the city to provide emergency services.

Traffic Accident Statistics for Westminster

The California Office of Traffic Safety placed the city of Westminster and its residents in a group of similar-sized cities to compare and rank their different traffic safety statistics.  Since the city had 89,807 residents, it was grouped with 102 other cities in California that had populations between 50,001 and 100,000 people.

There were 468 people that were killed or injured in Westminster car crashes in 2010, which was a decrease of 22 victims from the prior year.  With the 468 people being hurt, the city ranked 19 out of 103.

The city’s ranking for motorcycle injuries and deaths was at number 23 for 2010.  There were 16 victims of Westminster motorcycle accidents, a decrease of just one from 2009.

Only 10 other cities had more pedestrians over 65 years old being injured or killed in vehicle collisions than Westminster in 2010.  With 7 elderly victims, the city ranked 11 out of 103.  Even though the city saw the same number of victims over 65 years old as there was under 15 years old, the city’s rankings for the latter was at number 29.  Overall there were 33 pedestrians hurt in the city’s traffic collisions in 2010, an increase of 7 victims from 2009.

With 38 bicycle accident victims, the city’s ranking was 27 out of the 103 similar-sized cities.  The 2010 numbers was a large drop from 2009 when the city ranked 13 for its 47 bicycle crash injuries and deaths.  In 2009 there were 11 cyclists hurt that were younger than 15 years old, ranking the city at 8.  However, the following year the injuries decline to 3 placing the city’s rankings at 67.

For both 2009 and 2010, the city saw speed cause over 100 plus injury crashes.  In 2009 the city witnessed 117 speed related collisions and in 2010 there were 101.  For both years the city ranked in the top 15.

Injury collisions that took place between the hours of 9 pm and 3 am happened 42 times in 2010, which ranked the city at number 14 out of 103.  The preceding year saw 44 nighttime collisions.

The city experienced 24 hit-and-run collisions in 2010, a slight decrease from the 22 from 2009.

In 2010 there were 32 Westminster traffic collisions that involved alcohol.  This was almost the exact same from the previous year’s 31.  The 2010 numbers placed the city’s ranking at 56 out of 103.  Seven drunken drivers caused an injury crash while being under the age of 21 years old in 2010.  In addition 3 more drivers were between the ages of 21 and 34 years old when they were drunk and caused an injury collision.

Law enforcement did its job by preventing more alcohol involved crashes by arresting 294 drunken drivers in 2010, an increase of 7 percent from 2009.

Five times in the 10-year span from 2002 to 2011, the city of Westminster had a greater fatal car crash rate than the state average based on a 100,000-person population.  Only 4 times in the same 10-year span was the city higher than the state average for fatalities.  In 2011 the city’s fatality rate was 5.6 deaths per 100,000-persons while the state average was 5.7 deaths.  However the city’s fatal accidents count was at 5.6, which was higher than the state average of 5.4.

In reality the city experienced 5 fatal traffic collisions in 2011.  The first incident took place in January, when a boy who was riding his bike was struck and killed by a SUV near the intersection of Iroquois Road and Choctaw Drive.

A Westminster motorcyclist was killed in a vehicle collision in March when a drunken driver crashed in the rider.  The incident took place on the northbound 405 Freeway near the Westminster Boulevard exit.  The drunk driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated and gross vehicular manslaughter.

In late September, an elderly man was walking in the early morning near the intersection of McFadden Avenue and Beach Boulevard when a vehicle struck him.  Emergency services pronounced the man dead at the collision scene.
